BLOKART-NZ

The demo day at Macleans College yesterday was outstanding with 6 ABC club members assisting and stumping up with 9 blokarts for the 30+ students to use.

The views over the Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke Island and beyond to Coromandel were spectacular, the day was hot and sparkling … oh and the wind roared as strong as 3 knots for about 30 minutes. Undeterred, we carried on and had the students pushing each other around the rugby fields for an hour and a half.

When we did get some wind about half a dozen of the kids showed some ability and whizzed around the fields – we even had a few capsizes and they always seemed to be in Russell’s kart. One bright spark used a kart as a trolley and took off down a hill. The crashing noise we heard was the mast hitting the cross bar of the goalpost – luckily it was one of the old mast and sail combos.

Thanks to Dave H, Tony F, Tony B, Russell, and Ray for lending their blokarts and putting in their time to promote the sport. A special thank you to Ray for organising the students by advising them at assembly, showing the DVD to those interested, and all the admin that must be completed when dealing with schools.

About a dozen of the Macleans students have indicated they will be at BPP tomorrow afternoon to give it another go. It will be a busy day as we did a demo at Waiuku College last week with 24 students attending and Rowena is bringing a dozen from there as well. If any ABC member is prepared to lend their blokart and their time for the day it will be greatly appreciated. We have 5 x 4 metre and 3 x 3 metre sails with mast protectors for this purpose so 8 people needn’t worry about sail damage.

Next Sunday (the day after the 100km race) we have another schools day at BPP for Macleans, Waiuku, and any other students who turn up.

Hope to see you there tomorrow and next week.
