RegardsDave GriffinHi Dave,Well, We discussed this on the way home last night coming down is not out of the question but (there is always a but) I am running second in the Auckland Clubs Winter series and both events are on the same weekend and I can't make both unfortunately. Will most likely decide closer to the time an see what the weather forecast is like for the Waitarere Marathon.
Cheers

Everyone turned up by 12.30 for registration although the predictions of rain and lots of wind probably put some off as we finished with 37 entries. We had six entries from BBC and 4 came up from Hamilton. Thanks for supporting this event.By the time we got the 4 wheel drives on the beach for set up at about 1 there was still only a little area for sailing. In fact parked the van back from the water by the start line only to have a sweeper come in up to the front wheels. At this stage most had sailed along to the stream and it all looked a bit daunting with only the soft sand up by high water to sail on. We delayed the start a bit and finally got under way just after 2. After a couple of laps the beach was looking better and everyone was stretching out making the recording of each lap a bit easier. With 20+ knts most opted for 3 metre sails and the light school kids all had 2 metres thanks to Paul bringing some up from Papamoa. These students had a ball with the small sails and good wind and Brett going on to finish the 100 km, a great effort for first time on the beach. There was only one lap where the wind dropped off a bit and it moved around a bit at times so that sometimes it was fast going north and other times faster coming back but generally most had good speed. Nicko topped the speed for the day at 70.6 km/hr but there were several within a couple of km/hr of this speed.2 hours and 4 minutes after the start Orca crossed the finish line followed by Peter Cunningham doing his annual race and then Alex, one of the few with a 4 metre sail. These 3 took out the heavy weight division. Tony Frischer was first lightweight followed by David H and Grant1. Paul used the excuse of having to leave early to enter the 50 km race which he won followed by Derek and Dominic.Orca was dominant from half way through the first lap when he hit the front and extended his lead over the next 2 hours, great heavy wind sailing. There was always battles within the fleet over the race and a few hiccups as well with Haydn breaking a mast piece and others with a couple of punctures although not sure how these happened with no shells on the beach. There were a few sweepers to contend with but no real problem here as the beach widened as the tide went out.Jude and Rosie easily finished their first 50 km race and most finished the 100 kms without too much of a problem, nothing that a good sleep won't fix. Thanks to Grant and Marg for the start/finish and time keeping, TV Tony for coming along to take photos (to follow) and congratulations to all those who came along to make this a memorable Great Race. We finished the day with an informal prize giving and this will be formalised in June with the appropriate trophies being presented.Once again another Great Race, it was worth waiting for.Next weekend is the BBC race day and then we have our Sport Unleashed Winter Series on the 24 May, not the 31st as published in our calendar.Russellwww.jigluhood.com – communities that think for themselves
