It's a rumour!
Some interesting comments coming out considering I'm doing the handicaps at North Island Champs and am organising who is who in the Auckland teams for Sundays Teams racing event.

Fine weather with 8-10 SE predicted so looks like a good day coming up, but bring the winter woollies.
Format:
Meet at BPP approx 9.30 for set up
Briefing: 10 am
We have 8 teams.
Depending on wind we will sail a round robin, every team match racing every other team. Then sail off for placings. If wind comes in late then will divide into two groups of 4, sail round robin and then winners come through for sail off for placings.

Not to worry Dave, I have a cure for that too!  When it all gets too much for you, try my:

OINKSIP (with Lemon and Apple Sauce)
and a hint of stuffing (as Russell will see it that you are)

Ideal for:

  • tired trotters
  • chilly chops
  • snotty snouts

MAX MEDIA PARANOIA FORMULA

No rubbing required (sorry Margy)

(ingredients not suitable for making pseudoethedrine)

z
PS - Apologies to all that object to the flippant behavior exhibited here - we're getting cabin (or is it swine) fever and we are in need a good sail. Teams, Winter Series & Ohakea - here we come!

Wind is looking a bit better, up to 15 knts predicted from the South. Could be cold!
I have sent rules out direct to each team.
Meet about 9.30 at BPP, briefing 10 am followed by racing until mid/late afternoon. $10 per person includes barbeque.

Looking better all the time with wind now going SW which is ideal for our longer course.
After much negotiation and swapping of money Auckland now has Jude back in our ranks after Hamilton couldn't afford to keep her. As Nicko has said "even though the replacement is a much lesser sailor we have no choice, we just couldn't pay her fee". So welcome back Jude.
See everyone bright and early Sunday.

Well it's all over. The predicted wind didn't arrive so everyone had 5.5s up and those without them borrowed from other competitors. We used a short course and only one match race at a time. We ran 2 divisions of 4 teams and then the top 2 from each went through for a sail off.
It wasn't a heavy weight day but most teams had enough lightweights to be competitive and the racing was very even.
The early team arrive around 8 for set up and Theo and crew arrived about 8.30 having driven up from the Bay of Plenty. Must have been an early start! Roads were blocked off, tents went up, start system organised and we were ready to go.
We started with briefing at 10 and then a postponement until we got wind but a chance for tea, coffee and lots of food which continued throughout the day.
Got under way in light wind, had to a abandon a few races as it became variable but a good chance to mix up, swap ideas and make our way through all the food. Tony B kept the races ticking over and we finished the first round robin about 2 pm. Started the sail offs but ran out of time. Got some photos and had one all in race - about 35 on the start line - which Haydn ended up taking out from Barry and Ross L.
We sorted through the results to work out the places with Flyers getting third, Shooters dropping to second on a count back and V Team taking out the event in grand style. Good tactics and sailing all day, dropping only one race. The trophy now has a new home.
Interesting that 3 out of the top 4 teams had school sailors in them which shows the progress they are making in the club.
We finished with prize giving about 4 pm. Another successful event, great fun even if the wind didn't fully co-operate.
Thank goodness for 5.5s!

V Team: Tony, Grant, Barry, Fraser, Bill
Shooters: Margy B, Russell, Nick, Lucy, Jude
Flyers: Haydn, Neil, David H,Trevor H, Rowena

Thanks to the travellers from The BBC and Hamilton, it just wasn't a heavy weights day.
Thanks to the start/finish team who were faultless in making it all happen and getting points out immediately after each race; Tony B, Trish, Bev, Rosie, and Lu. I think you enjoyed it as much as the sailors from the look of it (photos to follow).
Thanks to Bruce and Jenny for organising the food and making the barbeque happen and Jon and Rosie for the most welcome drinks from Frucor. No one went hungry or thirsty!
Graham organised three tents, what a great bonus these were, and very easy to use, up in about 10 minutes. Long may they last.
Overall a very enjoyable day. Bring on the next one.

Hi Russel,

Thanks again such a great event. It is always good to sail with ABC and Waikato.

Even though the wind didn’t show up as forecast it was good to get to use the 5.5 metre sail and get the feel of it again.

I look forward to Ohakea to sharpen up some more hopefully.

Awesome day

Thanks heaps to your club for making it such a fun day.

Gazza

A great day!
From the Bay Blockheads team, many thanks ABC for yet another successful event. Yes the wind was light, but that's just part of Blokart racing. Teams racing is here to stay, I'm sure. Enjoyed the various different tactics being discussed. Some very inventive stuff!

Subject: [blokart] Auckland Teams Racing

Yesterday's team racing was a great event. Thanks to Russell and the committee and especially the timekeepers without whom it would not be an event. Thanks also to the food organisers. It was great to see the Hamilton and BOP guys there to make it extra special. We must also be very thankful to the BPP guardians for allowing us exclusive access to a very good facility.

The Teams racing results were VERY close, which shows that everyone is in with a chance.  It is interesting to note some of that tactics used on the day:

"Basking Shark Technique" - Sit in the middle of the course in your kart with your arms behind your head - tactic 1 - make out there is no wind and get the race called off.  When that doesn't work, tactic 2 - start sailing again and weave in and out of the other team (showing your greater speed) and claiming "right of way", and freaking the sailor out or forcing them into making a mistake (Nice one ORCA). Or is it "Basking ORCA"

"Blowfly Technique"
- (or is it honey bee?) - sail in formation at the start and
crowd out the other team - problem is it only works when you get to the start line
first (was that a S'hooters "team talk" idea?)

"Kamakaze technique" - sail directly at a member of the opposite team and see if they remember the port to port rule, or even which side is port - more of a concern is if you think the perpetrator even knows the answer, and a big worry when the person concerned last failed to give way to the container!  Years of playing "Chicken" at school helps here!

 "Bus Technique"
- capitalise on your weight and lack of speed and slowly round the mark making sure you sail any of the competitors (legally) off wide and into the grass, as this really slows them down - and let your team through on the inside (this was the most popular and effective manouver of the day!)

"Fake blow-out" - sends karters skittling to avoid the stranded sailor (but a etter method than capsizing your kart needs to be worked out)

"Bluffing" - call "starboard" at every opportunity in the hope that you might scare someone into believing you

"Rubber necking" - preferably with a loosely fastened helmet so the the competitor following is more concerned about having to dodge a loose helmet than sailing the course so your team mate can get past.

But fun aside, it is a tribute to all the sailors for the good sportmanship shown on the day.  Moreover, what a fantastic showing from the newbies - Lucy first across the start and holding off stiff competition for almost all the first lap, Dominic and Fraser holding off the Super Heavies. Plus Jude absolutely smokin' (or was that "strutting her stuff" with a borrowed 5.5) for the shooters!

And the secret of the winning team? But it wouldn't be a secret then.
