South Island Open - a huge success!

Many thanks to our hosts the Canterbury Blokart Club for a very well run event and for turning on great sailing weather at a brilliant venue.  It was also good to see the good exposure the event got locally - everyone I spoke to outside the of event knew it was on (at the airport - when visiting the relatives, while shopping). The view from the Museum Cafe was first class, and the amenities for the sailers top notch.

Congratulations to the great performance from Team ABC - a clean sweep in performance middleweights, 1st & 3rd in Lightweights, and a third in Heavies.  You'll have to wait for the official results from the organisers for the details!

But is was no walkover - the host club are on the pace and close on the heels of the winners - and all the other top-guns from clubs around NZ made it a real battle on the track.  So I can see some more people travelling to future events in future!

Sadly missed was our "Guru" who had to leave early because of a close family bereavement, but we held a "silent vigil" as a mark of respect on opening day (Thank you Jim).  The Guru would have been proud to see the new friendships and bonds formed that are now part of the blokart way.

Also the teamwork - what you see in the great family that blokarting creates - from the ABC travel arrangements, pooling of freight opportunites, sharing of duties during the event, help with the pack-up at the close of the event - and those great social events.

And finally the great sportsmanship - yes there were a few bumps, scrapes and hairy moments, but those are now all history!

Thanks from and to Team ABC!!

I agree with Grant. Great event, well run and a mixture of courses which kept everyone honest. Jim and Dave had a challenge with the wind at times but handled it with ease, and a bit of patience. Thanks to the Canterbury Club for great hospitality. And what a fantastic venue ... and last course to finish of the event.
for some photos of the event thanks to Marg. If you want good quality copies let me know direct at (Address removed)

Just like to endorse the comments made by both Grant & Russell.  Well done Canterbury, a very well organized and well planned event – huge thank yous to each and everyone for the part you played in that.  Great to meet you all and thanks for making us all so welcome.

Some special individual thank yous - Gordon for the nifty tyre changes (saved me a couple of broken finger nails), Jim & Son for ensuring we had enough rubber to see us through, Don for donating the bearing kit which Dave is so thrilled to add to his Blokart tool kit, Barry M&M for being constantly available so we could all buy raffle tickets which allowed us to participate in the table full of goodies (no mean feat to assemble all those nor give them out!) and Barf for arranging storage for our karts.

Again, a big thank you from the Capital Blokart Club team, we had a fantastic time!

Cheers Gaye & Dave

Hi to Grant and all

What a great show even if it was practice and one night at the Officers Mess.

We had the privilege of meeting many of the great characters that make up the landscape of a strong club.

It is a pity we were unable to stay for the duration. I have heard some great stories already

Thank you all for your condolences. Tina and I had an awesome time while in Christchurch.

My 91 yr old mum took a fall and bumped her head and within 24 hrs she had left the planet.

We will be back to sample more of the great fellowship and awesome sailing in the future.

Looking forward to 90 mile beach trip

Best Regards

Paul

So any spare 5.5’s out there?  My webbing strap may not be repaired in time, I have my fingers crossed mine will be fixed.

Hi Cam,

I'll bring mine for you and I'll use Sue's tonight.

But you're in my class – unlike the SIO....is this a smart move?

See you tonight and hope for more wind that the 5 knots at Papakura at the moment (9 knots forecast at noon and 6 PM).

Cheers

That was a bonus, wind through until 8.30 when the forecast was for it to drop off just after 6. Warm weather, shorts and t-shirt sailing. This meant 12 races in all, 6 per division although the last race of the night it was a bit patchy, some not helping themselves by pulling in after 2 laps. To start most set up 4 metre sails although a couple went to 5.5s "knowing" the wind always drops away. The bigger sails proved slower with a steady wind from the west providing a fast trip both ways along the road. It wasn't until after 6 races that half the fleet changed up although the 4s were still winning races but by the last  4 races everyone had on the big sail.
In the lightweights Barry, Grant, and Derek all got wins with Mako sitting on 2nds, 3rds and 4ths all night. Well done Derek on your first win in this division, winning the start and comfortably holding off the chasing bunch. Brian also had a good night with some 2nds and 3rds.
The heavies had Alex and Russell taking the gun with Nicko in 2nd or third place all night except where he had a slow tyre leak, not helping speed. Grant and Neil are consistently up in the front bunch pushing the leaders along.
Thanks to Trish for keeping everything ticking along quickly and Rowena, also doing timing duties but also organising marshals on corners as we start to get a bit busier with netball practice.
We packed up as the sun disappeared and drove home in the dark but well worth it for a full nights sailing.
Results out soon.

Less than 2 weeks to go!

Anyone else coming up? Bookings for cabins just about full, let me know quick for options.

We sail either east or west coast depending on wind, Orca and I make the call mid morning.
Quite a few are planning on sailing Thursday afternoon as well so there will be some prizes for this day. Otherwise Friday /Saturday as per normal with a mixture of races, short/long, reverse grid/self handicapping, relays and hooning around. Everyone is in with a chance for a prize.
Let me know soonest.
Details will follow on details with slightly changed arrangements this time around.

We are racing again this Thursday night, although forecast is for light easterlies, not the best for BPP. Also may get some showers.
Meet around 5 for set up. 5.30 at the start area for those hiring a transponder, 5.55 for briefing and race start about 6. We have 9 races for the series so far and would like to try for 15 over the next 2 race nights to get in the second drop. No racing on the 25th as most will be up at 90 Mile Beach. Any further people going?? Please let me know.
See you Thursday.

Light winds predicted this afternoon with a bit of rain thrown in. Heavy winds arriving later tonight from SW but may be too late for us. Will keep an eye on the weather and make a call mid afternoon if it's not on via email and text.

We got some light wind from the North so used the short course for 6 races. The new club trailer was used for the first time. Go to:
http://picasaweb.google.com/smokin.russell for photos of how the trailer came together.
Heavyweights started the night in about 5-6 knts, Ken joining us for the first time in about a year but with only a 4 metre suffered from lack of horsepower. 3 winners from the 3 races with Alex, Nicko, Russell all getting the gun.
Lightweights battled it out with some close racing, Barry getting two guns and Wayne the other. The last race night in two weeks time will be interesting as these two, along with Grant not back too far, are having a good battle for overall honours. Brian didn't do his chances much good when he missed a mark while leading the first race, pays to listen at the briefing, or not hit the lead on the first lap.
We finished after 6 races to open the "bar" in the trailer to celebrate a major project completed. Wayne thanked those involved and then was thanked himself for driving this project. Of course the wind then picked up a bit so we had an all in race to test a new software update which Marg won in a borrowed kart having come along for the celebrations.
Results out soon.
Next week most will be at 90 Mile Beach so no racing. The last race night will be 4 March.
Last chance for anyone to let me know about 90 Mile Beach trip, now a 3 day event as everyone is going to be there Thursday. At this stage we have over 30 karts plus lots of supporters and have a couple of cabins I could squeeze people in to. Updates direct to those down to go with all the final details.
